My name is Samuel Smith, in Summer 2026, I graduated from Carleton University with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my time at Carleton University, I was able to gain valuable experience in many different fields including Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Consulting Engineering, Research and Design.
During my schooling, I was also able to gain valuable work experience as a part of the Co-op Program first as a research assistant for Professor Andrew Speirs at Carleton University, then as a member of the Buildings Team at Envari Energy Solutions. I was also able to work for Carleton University in a variety of roles, first as a Teaching Assistant in second year, then as a member of the Student as Partners Program (SaPP) for Professor Edward Cyr and finally as a member of the Internship-Carleton University Research Experience for Undergraduate Students (I-CUREUS) with Professor Andrew Harris.
In my third year of study, I realized that Biomedical Engineers at Carleton did not have the same opportunity as students from other fields to gain experience through a design team. With that I made the decision to found BioCARE (Biomedical Carleton Applied Research and Engineering Team) a prosthetic design focused team which allows students from any faculty to gain invaluable hands on design and build experience.
I was also sat on the executive board of CUBES (Carleton Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Society) as VP Academic and VP Finance and in 2026 acted as co-VP Competitions for the Ontario Engineering Competition.
In my spare time, having come from a background of competitive national level canoeing and soccer, I spend it running, cycling and getting outside. In 2025, myself and a group of five other friends tackled the Ottawa Ironman, unfortunately during our training one of our teammates mother’s passed away from cancer. With that we set out to raise money in her honor and raised over $26,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society as the Hybrid Hobbyists. I have also recently gotten into photography (see gallery for some examples) and remain very passionate about music (both listening and playing) and sports.
